Silvertongues review
Production company – Acorn Arts & Entertainment
Rating –
Just before Christmas last year, I had a message via Facebook asking if I’d be interested in reviewing a new show. The premise seemed interesting, and I replied that of course I’d have a listen and check it out. And then… well, I forgot all about it. I had one new show, then another, then another, and before I knew it, five months had passed and I get another message asking if id had a chance to listen to it yet.
So it is with a huge apology, that I am currently on a binge of this show (that has since finished). But anyway, welcome to the island paradise of Kalalani, and the puzzling story of Silvertongues.
So what’s it about?
Roscoe Talbott & Tavi Jones have never met before, but they are both afflicted by a strange kind of amnesia. They also have no ID, no family, no memory at all of any past life. They are adrift.
After their initial meeting, they are desperate to solve this mystery. Some research online yields a single photo of Roscoe at a roller rink on the island of Kalalani, a place he’s never been to.
The two soon find themselves investigating some very strange happenings on an island that seems too good to be true. Everyone seems too happy, until you scratch the surface and the real story is exposed.
Is it any good?
The production company behind this show, Acorn Arts & Entertainment also created the excellent Call Of The Void. A show I enjoyed immensely (although I listened to it before I started this blog and haven’t got round to reviewing it).
The story is very well written, and as I said at the outset, it’s a brilliant premise. There are so many little details that flesh out the island you get a real feeling of a self contained reality here.
There are negatives here though. Whilst the voice talent is mostly very good, there is one truly awful accent. I’m not going to say who it is, you’ll certainly know it when you hear it.
The intro music is a bit strange too. I get the idea behind it, but I just don’t think it fits well with the story. Maybe that’s just me though.
Talking of music, during the earlier episodes featuring exciting chases and acts of derring do, the music intrudes a bit too much for my taste, and yet again, I feel it was a bit of a poor choice. Intrusive sounds in shows seem to be a bit of a trend in the shows I’ve been getting through, and this review won’t be the only mention of it.
Final thoughts
This is a great show overall. It’s not perfect. There’s no super intricate plot twists, but it is a fine way to pass a day or so. It would sit very well in the BBC Limelight series and as you’ll know by now, I’m a big fan of that series.
