Dig deep
Pretty Evil review
Rating – ![]()
It’s been quite nice recently. I have been receiving loads of emails from creators asking me to check their show out. So much so that I haven’t had time to do much digging on my own to find new shows. It makes me feel like I’m (almost) a professional. Especially when the people have actually read my blog, and I’m not just some name on a list of email addresses. This has been a noticeable change since I started focusing on indie productions.
I always feel obliged to have a listen, and very rarely are there shows I don’t like. Case in point, Jessica reached out to me to give me the heads up about her podcast Pretty Evil. It’s only 7 episodes old, and the synopsis was intriguing, so of course I gave it a go.
So what’s it about?
Pretty Evil is a true crime podcast that casts a broad net. The cases that are covered are not always what you’d expect from a run of the mill true crime show. That’s mainly because this isn’t a run of the mill true crime show, it’s far more than that.
What sets this show apart is the depth in which the cases are analysed. A lot of true crime shows will fixate on the horror and the gore, and paint the antagonists as monsters. I mean how can one human do something so debased to another right?
Well Pretty Evil covers the crimes, but then examines exactly why they happened. What was it that drove these people to become the way they are?
Is it any good?
The psychological examination is really why this show stands head and shoulder above most others. Yes, there are graphic descriptions of the crimes, I don’t think it would work if it didn’t. They are a necessary part of the case, and to completely gloss over the actual crime would be a disservice.
The psychological analysis is truly eye opening, and does restore humanity to what can easily become a lazy stereotype in the hands of the media. There are also stories here where you realise you may not be too far from the baying crowds that historically committed awful acts.
Where there are failings, these are highlighted. Where there is blame, it is highlighted. This often feels like an impossible balancing act, but Jess does it expertly.
Final thoughts
I honestly can’t think of another podcast that gives such a complete analysis of a crime. There is always something that seems to get left out. Not here though.
As I sit here trying to finish this review, I honestly can’t think of a show that is like this. It’s easily gone into my top 10 true crime shows. The sheer breadth of crimes would secure that spot, but I can’t wait to hear what cases will be covered in the future. I do actually know what the next episode is about, but I’m not telling you!
