Most of my discoveries nowadays come from trawling the various subreddits and social media groups dedicated to promoting indie podcasts. While this is certainly great fun and the source of many great shows, I really love it when creators reach out to me directly. This not only shows that the contract info on the blog is correct, it shows that people want to reach out to tell me about their podcasts. I won’t lie, it also makes me feel like a “professional” whatever that means!
A case in point is today’s podcast. I got an email from Joe, who wanted me to check out his podcast called The Story Of My Friends. He described it as “A weekly interview podcast – real people telling real stories. It’s independent, no big studio behind it, just genuine conversations recorded mostly around LA: a hospital-escape survivor, a world-record juggler, folk musicians, a Corvette road trip gone sideways.”
So what’s it about?
As you can probably deduce from that, this show casts a wide net indeed. There are many different experiences in any circle of friends, and Joe’s circle is varied indeed. It’s also more proof that everyone has at least one good story in them.
A small sample of the kind of stories that appear are mentioned in the paragraph I quoted in the preamble. I’m not going to add anything here to avoid spoiling anything, but rest assured, there are some very funny and very unbelievable tales told.
Joe does a brilliant job of giving his guests enough room to tell their story, and digress somewhat, but he always manages to keep everything on track. Whether by luck or judgement though, who can say!
Is it any good?
The premise of the show is refreshing. There are many “talk shows” out there that interview people who’s only job seems to be self promotion on talkshow podcasts. This however, is just two old friends chatting about their lives. Sometimes there are very funny stories, sometimes the content is more therapeutic. One thing it never is though, is boring.
Joe’s style is relaxed and informal, something you know that I love. These episodes are not so much interviews, but just Joe chatting to old friends and having a laugh. The fact that he knows his guests means that the stories are interspersed with reminiscences of other events, and Joe’s humour (and the humour of his guests) means that the episodes never get boring.
Episodes clock in somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. The reason for this is that there’s no pressure to cut a story short, or pad out to fit some arbitrary episode time limit. I wish that other shows would try this.
Final thoughts
If you love the glimpses into people’s lives that shows like this offer, then this is surely one of the better examples out there. It’s quickly becoming one of my favourite shows of 2026, and with 6 episodes left to go until I’m caught up, I’m sure that I’ll find the wait for new episodes frustrating!
