The things I do

Red Thread review

Rating – 3 brains

Look, I know I’m getting old ok? I go into a room and forget why I went in there. If I have an afternoon nap, I’m never quite sure what day it is when I wake up, and I can’t stand up without groaning like the ancient mariner’s ship. Finding a placeholder Google doc to write a review for a show I can’t remember is a new one on me though.

Just to keep my files in order, I will go through and arrange all my published posts towards the bottom of my list, and all the unfinished ones towards the top. I’ve done this countless times, and never noticed one for this podcast, but I can only assume it has been there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for its glory day on the blog.

Strangely though, I couldn’t remember a single thing about it, and I wasn’t even subscribed to the show! A mystery indeed, and one I’m at a loss to solve. But in keeping with this mysterious train of thought, on with the review of Red Thread.

So what’s it about?

Red Thread examines tales of the weird and wonderful. From cults and cryptids, to true crime and unsolved mysteries, there is no story too strange for these guys to dig into. The show was (originally) presented by three friends, Charlie, Isaiah and Jackson, and the episodes see this trio discuss the topic, plus digress into some very odd tangents. Over the short time this show has been released there have been numerous lineup changes, and it currently consists of Jordan and Jackson (the only original member).

Unfortunately, that’s about all there is to say about the show. It’s just one of a load of podcasts delving into spooky stuff in the manner of “investigation”.

Is it any good?

This is where I need to score in a diplomatic fashion. Look, I really didn’t like this show at all. I found the hosts to be irritating, and whilst they may well be qualified to discuss the topics, they came across as people whose research extends to watching YouTube videos. I’m sure that’s just the age gap between the hosts and me, but it’s a nagging feeling I can’t get rid of.

I know that I have a ten episode watershed, but I can’t get that far. I haven’t even got to episode 5, and I just can’t go on. I’ve got so many other shows to listen to that flogging this particular deceased equine is beyond my willpower. I did however, concede to skipping to random, recent episodes with new hosts to see if it had changed. After all, I’m confident enough to admit when I’m wrong. Unfortunately, I was right.

Ultimately, if you find shows like LPOTL too much for you, then you’ll probably love this show. In fact, I would say that Red Thread to LPOTL is like one of those modern reboots of a classic movie, when they remove all the stuff that modern audiences would disapprove of.

Final thoughts

As I said in the opening paragraphs, I’m getting old. And unfortunately that aging comes with a disdain for shows geared towards a younger audience. If you are in your teens or early 20s, then I’m sure you will love this show. It reminds me of the previously reviewed show The Tape Library, a review that got me my first hate mail. I guess you can’t say you’re famous until you get hate mail eh? And yes, you can delete posts from social media when you sober up, but my scheduling app stores all that stuff!

I have given this series a “diplomatic” three brains. Personally, I would have given it a two, but I realise that there is a market for shows like this, and they are indeed popular. Therefore, it gets an extra one, just because in feeling nice.
