I first heard about this show from those scallywags over at Wimplash. You know by now that whenever anyone mentions a podcast, I have to immediately check it out and hoard it, magpie-like until I am in need of something new. 

I don’t really have a schedule for reviews per-se, unless it’s a release day review. I tend to have a few reviews laying in various states of completion, and inspiration will strike and I’ll finish one and post it. Occasionally, I’ll get a review that falls out of my head, and that is the case today. Well, pretty much anyway.

So what’s it about?

Hey, That’s Weird is a showcase for real life spooky stories. You’ll no doubt recall that I have reviewed shows like this in the past, most notably Uncanny and Radio Rental. Both of those shows are an influence on this, but whilst the aforementioned podcasts really fell off in quality, this one seems to be doing just fine. Tales of haunted houses, UFOs and all manner of spooky encounters are covered, and the tales are told by the people who experienced them. 

The series is created and presented by Luc Frost, a British guy living in Canada. As such, a lot of the early episodes featured stories from around his immediate vicinty (relatively speaking). As the podcast has grown though, so has the scope of the stories. There are now tales from North and South America, and Europe too.

Is it any good?

As I said, the other shows like this are ones that got so poor in quality that I have unsubscribed from them. The most recent series of Radio Rental (AFAIK) when Terry Carnation didn’t actually appear was twice as bad. At least that character was good enough to carry the poorer episodes.

This show however is very understated. It’s not an interview like Danny Robins has on Uncanny, rather it’s just the person telling their story. Any questions are kept to the end, and they are just general things, rather than expansions of the story. 

There is something I really love about hearing these stories first-hand. Having a story narrated to you by the host is ok, but they tend to wax lyrical in an attempt to keep your attention (yes, Real Survival Stories, I’m talking about you). the thing I find scariest about this, is the way that these stories are told in a matter of fact way, sometimes bordering on lightheartedness. I know from my personal strange experiences, that hindsight smooths off some of the fear, and that laughter is the best medicine.

Final thoughts

If there is a hole in your listening that can only be filled by true tales of terror, then you should really check this out immediately. The quality of the show and the stories found here are well worth your time. The fact that I binged all the episodes in just over a day should tell you all you need to know about how much I love this podcast.
